故事发生在十九世纪中叶，有一位对主人忠心耿耿的黑奴，人们都称他为汤姆叔叔（约翰·奇兹米勒 John Kitzmiller 饰）。汤姆叔叔的主人投资失败濒临破产，无奈之下只能将包括汤姆叔叔在内的数十名奴隶卖给了奴隶贩子里格利，一行人跟着里格利浩浩荡荡的向南方出发。
