全片以情感充沛的文學視度，重新回顧解讀外省族群七十多年以來，寄託於簡陋眷村之中的顛沛流離命運。片中不僅引用大量的文學片段，更訪問到許多出身眷村第一代、第二代的重量級台灣作家。。身怀绝技的盲人按摩师座头市（胜新太郎饰）行走江湖，在途经关宿时受邀为黑田家的殿下按摩。谁知殿下举止癫狂，行为异常，为了防止家丑外泄，黑田家命令武士截杀归途中的阿市，但刺客全部死于阿市刀下。躲避仇家之际，阿市邂逅女郎阿节（水谷良重饰），这位温柔的女子令他想起曾深深伤害过自己的千代。短暂盘桓，阿市再度启程，为了祭拜死于他刀下的平手造酒而返回笹川，而被黑田家买通的黑道头目堪兵卫（泽村宗之助饰）则带领徒众紧随其后。 与此同时，与座头市有着极深渊源的独臂浪人与四郎（若山富三郎饰）及其小弟三藏（中村丰饰）逗留笹川，宿命的杀伐在所难免……。Four young people are enjoying the easy life, cruising on a yacht in the sun.
