故事发生在1974年的春天，静秋（王珞丹 饰）跟随教材编写小组来到了名为西村坪的村庄，在那里，她结识了名叫孙建新（李光洁 饰）的男子。孙建新善良热情，在生活中帮了静秋不少的忙，随着时间的推移，静秋和孙建新之间渐渐产生了纯洁真挚的爱情，但腼腆内向的静秋并没有将感情表露出来。
一个名叫丹娘（孙璐 饰）的女孩出现在了静秋的身边，她自称是孙建新的未婚妻，这让静秋深感遭到了背叛，她默默地疏远了孙建新。几番波折之后，丹娘总算是解开了静秋对于孙建新的误会，静秋也开始正视内心里对于孙建新的强烈感情，然而，就在此时，孙建新竟然一声不响地在静秋的世界里消失了。。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut.
