20年代，洞庭湖区有一个叫梅春的农村妇女。她淳朴勤劳、善良贤慧，对丈夫陈德隆的打骂折磨，一向逆来顺受。当她丈夫在赌场上把她当成"一盆洗脚水"泼掉时，她再也无法忍受下去，在丈夫和老黄瓜的追逐下，毅然跳进了湖里。幸亏被乡亲们搭救，免于一死。1926年夏天，大革命的洪流涌到了湖南偏僻的滨湖农村，梅春也小心翼翼地迈出了家门，上了夜校，并在前来搞农运的一位革命青年黄立秋的启迪下逐渐觉醒，产生了对新生活的向往。后来她终于勇敢地冲破封建樊笼，与原来"坟墓式"的家庭决裂……。January is forced to return home after six years traveling abroad.
