故事发生在1942年抗日战争时期的某抗日根据地。讲述了八路军叶排长和女战士何静奉命带领齐晓东等七个孩子向后方转移，历尽重重艰难，终于回到大部队的故事。
井田率日军袭击村庄后，团长派叶排长和何静护送齐晓东、妞妞等六个孩子到后方，再与大部队会合。这些孩子都是烈士的遗孤或者父母因为革命工作不能照顾的孩子，他们一路寻找队伍，一路用自己的智慧和勇敢与日本鬼子和汉奸进行着斗争……
在撤退的过程中，村民为了保护他们而被井田残忍的杀害，叶排长引开井田等日军，让何静带着孩子逃脱。然而齐晓东却不幸被井田抓住。叶排长和王大叔设计救出了齐晓东。
